A calmer dental visit

Sedation Dentistry — Calm, Comfortable Treatment

Many people postpone the dentist for years — and it is fine to admit that. At Dental Story in Novyi Lviv (Sumska 10) there are two calm paths:

1) a regular first visit without sedation — exam, talk, priced plan; 2) treatment under sedation — when anxiety is strong or the volume is large, and you consciously choose this format.

Sedation is not “required for everyone who worries”. It is an option after explanation and examination.

First visit without sedation

If you have not been to a clinic in a long time or simply worry — you can start small.

  • Exam and talk. We listen to complaints and fears. Nothing is forced “in one visit”.
  • Scan only if needed. Only when required for the plan — we explain why.
  • Priced plan. What to do now, what can wait, approximate cost before start.
  • Shared decision. Ordinary treatment with local anaesthesia, splitting into visits, or — with indication and your wish — discussing sedation.

The goal of the first visit is clarity and trust — not “selling sedation”. Sedation = an option after explanation and assessment, not the only path.

If fear is strong — start small

  • An adaptation visit / simply talk to the dentist without treatment the same day.
  • Professional hygiene as a soft entry to the clinic: hygiene
  • For a child — a separate pace and getting to know the chair: pediatric dentistry

We discuss sedation when the ordinary path is truly hard or the treatment volume is large.

When sedation is appropriate

We treat teeth under sedation, supervised by an anaesthesiologist, to help you feel calmer. Your doctor will decide at the consultation whether sedation is right for you.

  • people with strong dental fear (dentophobia);
  • with a pronounced gag reflex;
  • when it is better to do a large volume in one visit;
  • children — by indication and decision of the pediatric dentist and anesthesiologist.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis or a substitute for a dental exam. Indications, contraindications and procedure scope are set individually after an examination (and imaging when needed). For acute pain, facial swelling, or bleeding that will not stop, call +380 68 232 38 38 — do not wait for an online slot.

Why sedation at Dental Story

A calmer visit

For those who postponed for years: sedation helps complete treatment more calmly. If you are ready without it — we support that path too.

Anesthesiologist nearby

An anesthesiologist monitors your state throughout the procedure.

Large volume in one visit

Several teeth or more complex treatment in one appointment — when that is safer and more convenient by plan.

For children and adults

Separate protocols. For children we always agree the decision with parents: pediatric dentistry

Contraindications (discussed individually)

We do not schedule sedation “off the street”. At the consultation the anesthesiologist always considers the status of:

  • the cardiovascular system;
  • the lungs and airways;
  • the endocrine system;
  • the liver;
  • pregnancy.

This is not a full medical handbook and not a list of “practically no contraindications”. The decision comes only after examination and a talk with the anesthesiologist.

How treatment under sedation goes

  1. 1

    Consultation and exam

    Exam, required labs, and anesthesiologist consultation. We do not sedate “off the street”.

  2. 2

    Treatment plan with estimate

    We agree scope, duration, and cost before start.

  3. 3

    Treatment under sedation

    During sedation the dental team follows the treatment plan while the anesthesiologist monitors continuously.

  4. 4

    Wake-up and rest

    You wake and rest in the clinic. Discharge only with an adult escort; driving the same day is not allowed.

Informed consent

Before sedation you receive a clear explanation of:

  • which technique is planned;
  • what the risks are;
  • what the alternatives are (including treatment without sedation, shorter visits, local anaesthesia);
  • the chance to ask questions.

Written consent is signed before the procedure. Without it we do not proceed with sedation.

FAQ

How does sedation differ from general anaesthesia?

During sedation you breathe on your own, reflexes remain, and wake-up is usually faster. General anaesthesia is deeper and needs a different recovery protocol. Exact differences for your case are explained by the anesthesiologist.

Is it safe?

With pre-procedure examination and continuous anesthesiologist control, sedation is a controlled medical method. Risks and contraindications are discussed individually — without a “zero risk” promise. Labs and anesthesiologist consultation are required before sedation.

Who is dental treatment under sedation for?

People with dentophobia, a strong gag reflex, children (by indication), and when a large volume must be done in one visit.

What will I feel?

Feelings during and after the procedure vary: short-term drowsiness or disorientation are possible. The anesthesiologist explains in advance what to expect in your protocol.

Can I eat before sedation and drive afterwards?

After sedation you must not drive until the end of the day. An adult escort for the trip home is a required condition of safe discharge (not a “preferably” tip). A fasting pause is required before the procedure — exact timing comes at the consultation.

Can I just talk first, with no treatment and no sedation?

Yes. You can book a consultation / first visit, describe the fear, and get a plan. Treatment and sedation are scheduled only with your consent. Book: online booking

Is sedation mandatory if I am anxious?

No. Many people do fine with explanation, local anaesthesia, shorter visits, or hygiene first. We offer sedation when it truly helps — not as the only way to “survive the dentist”.

What exams are needed before sedation?

Before sedation you need an exam, required lab tests and an anaesthesiologist consult. We do not provide sedation “off the street” without that.
